Frequently asked questions.
We offer all major medical imaging modalities, including x-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI, SPECT-CT and PET-CT, at Auckland Radiology. We provide comprehensive diagnostic and interventional imaging services delivered by highly trained technologists, specialist expert radiologists and caring staff.
Once you have a referral you can book your appointment online or by calling our booking team, whichever suits you best. Our online booking system lets you select your procedure and see all available dates and times, so you can choose the location and timeframe that suits you best.
Standard x-rays do not require appointments. As long as you have a referral you can turn up to any of our clinics that offer x-ray and be seen on the same day. All other procedures do require booking in advance.
Yes. Medical imaging procedures are generally very safe. Ultrasound uses sound waves and MRI uses magnetic fields, these have no known harmful effects and are both safe for children or during pregnancy. Other imaging tests like x-rays and CT scans do use a low dose of radiation, but the amounts are very small and carefully controlled. If you are, or might be, pregnant do tell our team before your x-ray or CT; as a precaution we avoid or adjust certain scans during pregnancy unless absolutely needed.
A PET-CT scan combines a PET scan (which shows organ function using a safe radioactive tracer) with a CT scan (which shows detailed anatomy) to create a 3D image. It’s often used to detect or monitor cancer and can also help to evaluate certain heart or brain conditions or find the source of unexplained pain or infection. PET-CT is a routine, very safe procedure. If your specialist recommends at PET-CT scan it’s because the detailed information from the scan will be very helpful in guiding your care.
